Andrés Alonso
Details:
Run by Bodega Raíces Ibéricas in the village of Maluenda, Andrés Alonso draws on high-altitude plateaus of old vines planted up to 1,000 metres above sea level. Calatayud is the smallest of Aragón’s four DO appellations, a patchwork of small old-vine Garnacha and Syrah plots set on distinctive slate soils that lend the wines their mineral character.
Beyond Aragón, the project reaches into lesser-known regions such as Cigales and Castilla y León, working with native Iberian varieties throughout.
Since 1998 the team has travelled the quieter corners of Spain, climbing to plateaus of old vines and listening to the farmers and winemakers who work them. The aim is simple: make the best wines possible while telling the stories of overlooked regions and their people.
The name honours Andrés Alonso, a shepherd from the Sierra de la Culebra in Aliste, Zamora – a friend of the winery whose simple wisdom and love of the landscape inspired the venture. Each wine is treated as the story of a person and their territory, a philosophy reflected in the winery’s commitment to transhumance and biodiversity.
