The inaugural release Edition I from Domaine Evremond, Champagne Taittinger’s English sparkling wine, signals an ambitious and highly polished entry into the English sparkling category. Taittinger’s chef de caves Alexandre Ponnavoy, said the project is guided by a pursuit of “pure elegance,” shaped by Kent’s chalk and flint soils.
This non-vintage cuvée blends 55% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, and 10% Pinot Meunier, primarily from the 2020 vintage, with reserve wines from 2018 and 2019. Aged over three years on lees and fully undergoing malolactic fermentation, the wine is crafted entirely in stainless steel, emphasizing precision and purity.
On the nose, it offers bright citrus—lime and sour lemon—layered with toasted sourdough, seashell minerality, and a subtle reductive edge. The palate is crisp and saline, reflecting its English terroir, yet rounded by a gentle creaminess. Notes of green apple, white peach, quince, and a touch of honey are lifted by a pinch of white pepper.
The mousse is fine and refined, almost meringue-soft, carrying through to a finish marked by chalky tension and a delicate hint of crushed almond.
Critics such as James Suckling and Robert Parker highlight its balance, elegance, and composure. There’s already a clear stylistic identity here—focused, restrained, and quietly confident—suggesting that Domaine Evremond could quickly establish itself among the leading names in English sparkling wine.
